1. Set goals, but don’t set unrealistic expectations
The hype is real. Once those first product orders are submitted to the manufacturers, and the tees and hats start coming in, your mouth begins to water in anticipation. “Our stuff is the coolest stuff out there! Next up, REI! Target! Macy’s!” Yes, that was us, especially after we signed up for our first festival, the Atlanta Sweetwater 420 Festival. Which leads us to our next mistake.
2. Check the weather before you sell outdoors
Because we didn’t. The day started like any other hot sunny day in downtown Atlanta. Hot and sunny. But that changed. After we downed a couple of festival beers and street tacos, the storm hit us like a ton of bricks. The wind pushed our tent 10 feet up in the air and our product went everywhere. The only thing we could cling to was our plastic beer cups and soggy street tacos. Which reminds me.
3. Don’t lose your mojo
Because we did. Our new orders of t-shirts and hats were soaked. The neatly packed and folded boxes and displays we set up that very morning were trashed, and so were our egos. #RealityCheck. But don’t let that stuff get you down, that’s part of living the adventure! Instead, do this.
4. Get back in there and FIGHT!
Damn right. We didn’t let those soggy hats and tees sag our ambitions. Right after the festival, we came out with 20 new designs and started placing orders. Once the figurative inspirational wind hits your back, you ride it baby. And we did. As a matter of fact, we still are! We are always looking for the next best thing, the next improvement we can make to be better. But always remember.
5. Have fun
It’s our mantra. Actually, "Live the Adventure" is but it's the same thing. Life has its ups and downs, but that’s life. Our job is to ride those waves as best we can and make the most out of it. Don't let life get the best of you! Get the best out of life.
